Future Safety : V2V - Vehicle To Vehicle Communication

Communication is often cited as being the secret to a successful relationship. It may also be the key to preventing thousands of auto accidents every year.
Vehicle-to-vehicle communication, or V2V, is the next big thing in auto safety. In a V2V system, onboard computers communicate wirelessly with each other over distances up to 1,000 feet. These computers monitor relative speeds, distances and direction of similarly equipped vehicles in the area and issue warnings to drivers when they predict a possible collision.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working with American, German and Asian automakers to set standards for commercial V2V. Right now, a yearlong test of V2V is under way in Ann Arbor, Mich., involving 3,000 cars, trucks and buses to see how well the system works. If successful, V2V could become standard equipment in all cars sold in America within a decade.
Supporters of V2V believe the system can help drivers in many ways, including:
  • Warning of cars running red lights or stop signs
  • Clearing drivers to make left turns in the face of oncoming traffic
  • Warning drivers when passing is unsafe on two-lane roads
  • Warning drivers when cars ahead of them abruptly hit their brakes
  • Alerting drivers of an approaching vehicle hidden around a corner

Auto safety experts expect second-generation V2V systems to actually take control of a car if collisions appear imminent. The split-second difference between when a computer and distracted human can hit the brakes could easily mean the prevention of thousands of deaths and injuries annually.
Coupled with GPS navigation or tracking system, it will bring ultimate safety in future driving.

What To Do To Have Safe Teen Drivers

It's one of the toughest conversations you'll ever have with your teen, and it has nothing to do with birds and bees. Talking to your kids about driving is an art and a skill – and it could save their lives.

Research has shown that parents are one of the biggest forces keeping teens safe in cars. The rules parents set up, and how they're enforced, keep teens from getting into dangerous situations.

But too often, parents find themselves in one of two camps: The laissez faire group, who trust driver's ed will do its job and their teen will learn the rules of the road the hard way; and the little dictators, who blow their tops every time their teen makes a mistake behind the wheel and see yelling and screaming as an effective way to keep their teens under control.

[This is the third article in our Teen Driving Safety series. Please read Teen Drivers Making Common and Fatal Mistakes and Think Driving Schools Make Safe Drivers: Think Again.]

You want them to come home and talk

"You have to keep it an emotionally safe conversation, watching the eyeball rolling and tones of voices," says Dr. Charles Sophy, a psychiatrist who specializes in family communication. "You want them to come home and tell you if they are having problems."

Researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) say authoritative parents who set rules, explain why those rules are in the teen's best interest, and then set consequences when rules are broken, are the parents who have the most influence on their child's safety. The hospital hosts a web site called Teen Driver Source, which includes a section on how parents can supervise teen drivers.

Shell Malaysia Told To Cancel Contest

Posted on July 2, 2012 at 7:10 pm

Shell Malaysia has been instructed by the government to cancel its recently-launched promotion which gives away RM60,000 each week. The promotion goes against government guidelines concerning products which are subsidized, in this case RON95 petrol and also diesel.
The promotion began last Thursday and it is not known how Shell Malaysia will handle entries by customers in the past few days as its statement this evening only says ‘for customers who had participated, a separate communication will be issued at a later date’.
Though there is no specific regulation forbidding petrol companies from having promotions to draw more customers, there has been an understanding that there should not be promotions or incentives given for the purchase of fuels as they are subsidized products. This is not something new and as far back as the mid-1980s, the first controversy started when Shell Malaysia offered a house as the top prize in a fuel-related promotion. Until then, all the other petrol companies had been abiding by the guideline but as a result, the other companies also quickly responded by running promotions of their own and the ministry had to step in and put a stop, reminding all parties not to do such promotions.
The government does not want companies to have promotions or sales incentives for subsidized fuels, eg Shell FuelSave 95
It is not known why, in recent years, fuel-related promotions have been running again and why the ministry did not take action to stop them. However, it is evident now that the authorities are acting and according to an industry source, a memo was sent to all oil companies last month to remind them that they cannot have any promotions that give instant rewards (mineral water, soap, tissue paper, etc) or even contests which relate to subsidized fuels.
The reason is understandable – encouraging people to buy more subsidized fuel will also mean more money spent on subsidies when motorists should instead be trying to reduce fuel consumption. As mentioned earlier, there is no regulation but the industry source suggested that failure to follow such ‘administrative guidance’ would not be in the interests of the company’s business.
Loyalty programs (with points given for purchases) are also a gray area and though Shell’s participation in the Bonuslink program does give its customers points for their fuel purchases which can be redeemed for products or services, a senior executive at Shell Malaysia asserted some years ago that it does not contravene the guidelines.
